Okay, Private Practice, no. This is not okay. You have never made me angry until today. I don't usually post while something is airing, but I am just so pissed off about this I have to.

The woman was not conscious. Her husband had sex with her. That is rape. Period. End of story. This is a case of a clear right and wrong. There is no debate to be had. The woman could not consent to sex. Having Sam defend him (and yes he was defending him, and so were the others besides Addison), was not okay. I don't care how deluded the man was. He wasn't insane, and he knew what he was doing. It was rape. The man should be in prison. End of story. Stop painting her as irrational when she's right. I wouldn't want to sleep with a man who was defending a rapist either.

Edit: Having gotten to the end of the episode, my point still stands. Yes, the man needed therapy, but that does not mean he should not have been in prison or maybe a secure mental ward or something. He at least needed to be arrested and have a trial. Simple therapy is not enough. He raped his wife (or his wife's body since she most likely wasn't in there anymore).

Agreed. I'm so annoyed Sam would defend him to that extent that it caused such an argument between them. That wasn't the moral dilemma for them to fight on. There could have been more interesting scenarios created to cause them tension. Maybe they were just setting up this next storyline with Charlotte (which, btw, OMG), but still. I cannot see Sam as the type to take that side and to be have such a strong "I'm right and you're wrong" attitude.

Wait until the end... I did warn the mod about this, seems it may have been ignored...

Did I do something wrong? I marked it for spoilers.

No no no about the rape (woman and man) and what happens to Charlotte....
philstar22philstar22 on October 29th, 2010 04:10 am (UTC)
Oh, well then yes, I saw to the end and what happened to Charlotte (which I already knew was going to happen from spoilers). Doesn't change that the man also raped or that Sam was completely in the wrong. There are different kinds of rape, but rape is still rape.

I mainly warned cause it can be a trigger for some people...didnt want anyone to be unprepared. I have not as yet watched the episode but I will.
philstar22philstar22 on October 29th, 2010 04:12 am (UTC)
Oh, I didn't think of that. I definitely will edit to put in a trigger warning.

I don't tend to get super angry with any episode (even this one) because they almost always have some of the doctors on one side of the issue, and some of them on the other. I agreed 100% with Addison, even with her whole bringing the issues from work home with her. I just think I'm better than she is about not saying things I can't take back. :)

Anyway, while we're talking about this episode ... I had no idea that ending was going to happen tonight! I knew the whole episode next week was going to be about what happened, but I wasn't expecting it now. I don't read EVERY spoiler for the shows I watch, but I'm so glad I knew what was coming, and that I could be prepared for it based on what I had read. YIKES.

I knew it was coming, and I expected it would be tonight because doing it as a cliffhanger is typical for tv shows. I'm a person who can't resist spoilers. Even when I miss episodes of things, I end up reading the recap even if I haven't seen it. It doesn't ruin the experience for me personally.

I really think they should have gone out of there way to warn people, though. There should have been a warning for rape before the episode started. I'm a Criminal Justice major, so rape doesn't bother me. It triggers some people, though, so it really wasn't cool that they didn't warn.

For me it's kind of a vicious cycle with spoilers... I like to know when things like this are coming, but because I know that they are, the tension is just that much worse. As soon as she had that random line, I was absolutely shocked because I knew what was coming, and my heart was pounding like crazy the whole time she was in her office. I don't know if this will make sense, but as soon as it happens, I'm 'okay'. It's the waiting that kills me!

I thought they did a good job of warning people this was a different episode, though. I don't know about where you are, but here, after every commercial, there was one of those "this show contains mature subject matter" things, which it doesn't usually have. It's actually kind of funny, because I noticed that, but totally didn't clue in that that meant it was going to happen tonight.

I have mixed feelings about this whole "trigger" thing. I get that it happens, I just think you can't completely avoid it if you want to watch stuff like this. What they showed tonight was scary, but I think it wasn't as graphic as it could have been, perhaps so that people who are bothered by it can choose not to watch next week? That ending would have been completely out of nowhere for someone who doesn't read spoilers, and I think it's unreasonable to expect the show to spoil such a big moment like that.

Also, rape is a big deal to me. It is one of those things that is just clear-cut. And the fact that Sam and several others didn't see it that way just made me angry. I can see maybe being a little less clear about it since the guy did have some mental issues, but for Sam to outright insist that Addison was wrong just angered me.
lilacmermaidlilacmermaid on October 29th, 2010 05:19 am (UTC)
No, I get that, definitely. What surprised me is that they all assumed it was some random person who had done this ... I knew basically right away that it was him, just by how he reacted.
lilacmermaidlilacmermaid on October 29th, 2010 05:41 am (UTC)
Also, I meant to ask ... was there a promo after the show? They never air them for PP here.
philstar22philstar22 on October 29th, 2010 05:44 am (UTC)
Yes, there was a promo, at least here. It looks like it is going to be a good episode. They clearly are going to really work with this storyline and show how it effects everyone. Cooper made me want to cry, even just in the preview.
lilacmermaidlilacmermaid on October 29th, 2010 05:53 am (UTC)
Thanks :)

Because they don't air them here, and they're obviously not posted online right away, I always forget to go looking for them before the next episode.
